I’m a sentimentalist, and I love Thanksgiving—certainly my favorite [American] holiday. Thanksgiving this year was two weeks ago, on Thursday, November 23. After I realized that I was going to be on business in Romania for most of the 23rd, and in London shortly thereafter, decided upon something drastic. In order to Thanksgiving at all, it would have to take place in my house on the ninth of December.
This’ll be the fifth Thanksgiving that I’ve spent in Germany, the third large dinner party I’ll be cooking, and my fourth roast stuffed turkey here. Not coincidentally, my last two German Thanksgiving feasts, in 2001 and 2005, were also celebrated at least two days late. No days off for the fourth Thursday of November here! They don’t know what they’re missing…
